I'm already in the industry, actually. I've worked on games released on Dreamcast, PS2, and XBox 360 so far, and have a game for the Wii which should be appearing on store shelves sometime in the next few weeks.

The initial intent behind the VectorStorm engine was to make it an open-source example of what a commercial-quality game engine running on a (fictional) game console is like, which is why it intentionally has a static controller spec, limited memory, etc.

Of course, I've broken most of those initial intentions during the creation of MMORPG Tycoon, allowing mouse input, vastly increasing the memory space available, etc.

Okay. I'm improving that error handling in the next version. :)

But with that said.. the "2" return value is ENOENT, which translated from C-speak to english, is complaining that a directory doesn't exist.

This probably means that you don't have a Data directory in the same directory with the game executable, or that there's no "Preferences" directory inside that Data directory.

In the past, we've seen this happen because someone's unzip program just dumped all the game's files inside a single directory, rather than obey the directories specified in the zipfile. We've also seen it happen because some unzip programs don't create empty directories (such as the Preferences and Saves directories) even if they are specified in the zipfile.

Create those directories manually, and stuff should work. In the next release I'll have placeholder files in those directories to force them to be created even by lazy unzipping tools. ;)

I also seem to be missing the preference files, no doubt causing the bug. :V

Kinda strange though, so far I've missed the Saves directory and the preference files in 1.0.16.

Meerkat, can you check the contents of your MMORPG.prefs file, in the Data/Preferences directory, and post the contents? From your explanation, it sounds an awful lot like the old "invalid value for the autosave preference" bug that I fixed in 1.0.16. Maybe I missed a weird corner case, or something.

Any useful assert or anything in the stdout.txt file?

The music was a little high(was too lazy to adjust computer volume), so I turned it down a tad and the game crashed as I hit the "Apply" button. I figured that it was, quite obviously, a bug. I went to make this thread, but as I tried again without changing anything, it crashed again.

Heh. It's not 1.1, but I've just put up 1.0.15, which has a fix for the 'subscribers after a load' problem, has a fix for the 'not resetting XP after gaining a level' problem, and has autosave implemented.

Yeah, it's really cool to catch a game early on in development because you get to see a lot of changes to it. :)

I hope to see 1.1 soon, trevor. *cracks whip*

It's good to know the subscribers are still there :)

I hadn't started paying attention to the revenue increase before the save to notice if it slowed down or not.

I'm definitely looking forward to 1.1. Actually, I haven't been this excited about a game update in a while!

Whoah. Thanks for pointing that out, Jason! With your comments, I went back to look closer and found a big bug in the game loading code.

Basically, the bug causes that on-screen display to not count people who were online at the time of the save as being subscribers.

This doesn't affect anything except for the number displayed on-screen; it doesn't actually affect the functioning of the simulation in any way. But I'll get a fixed version up ASAP. And you'll be able to load your current saved game in the fixed version just fine. :)

Well, it was within seconds of the game starting for both games.

I started a new game in a new slot, and played for a bit. After a while, I had zones for leveling up to 30, 1200 subscribers, (avg sat = 2, avg add = 1, avg lvl 20).

I exited to save, and when I restarted, everything was exactly the same except I had 743 subscribers.

So far, it's a random loss of subscribers (for me at least).
Going to play a shorter game and save at 600 subscribers to test it.

The second game, maybe your combat range and zones didn't match. For example, if there was a combat range of 5, a subscriber wouldn't want to start out in a zone much higher than 1-5. A picture would be nice, since subscribers may quickly notice some things and get frustrated.

I am using version 1.0.14 on Vista

I first found 1.0.4, and after a few hours, I checked the website and found the newer version.
The first game I started on 1.0.14, I paused, then spent a few minutes setting up my zones/towns, and once I pushed play, it crashed.

Second game, pause, setup, this time it didn't crash when I pushed play. So I decided to save, but when I went back in, my subscribers went down to 1 (only 20-30 seconds had gone by in game, and in game players was still 201).

Any ideas on if this is a game issue, or a computer issue?
