Antichamber

ss_8604088893b9d0ea42d41c741619e740e92fcee0.600x338A few hours ago, quite randomly, I met Alex Bruce, the author of Antichamber, a first-person-perspective puzzlish game which I’ve been playing for the past few days.  (Buy it — it’s on sale!)  Tremendously inspiring that a game of this quality came was put together by a single bedroom programmer.  Now, a game with this much passion and creativity could hardly have been made in any other way — having a large team work on it would lead to the ideas being diluted and game mechanics being cribbed from other sources.  But the attention to detail and the amount of playtesting evident here is stunning, for a one-man operation.

Anyhow, it seems to me that the guy’s got his head screwed on right about where the industry is, where it’s been, where it’s going, and about the right way for developers to engage with the market (and the various ecosystems surrounding the market), to the benefit both of the developers and of the people who play their games.

Going to be idly ruminating over this for the next few days, I’m sure.  Will post a follow-up once I have my brain in order.
