Oddly enough I had an experience like this working with robots for my PhD thesis. I was working with a group of robots that I'd built, which were designed to move as a group toward a goal location. Well, one day while testing, one of the robots started to show signs of a dying battery, so we turned it off and worked with the remaining robots. After a while, we noticed that they were all veering away from empty space -- the last known location of the robot we'd turned off. Apparently they didn't like walking over that robot's "grave" :)
